E2ml a Visual Instructional Design Language
نویسنده
چکیده
The advent of technologies has changed our very idea of what a course is (Bates & Poole, 2003). Instructors in Higher Education are now daily supported by instructional designers or educational technology experts that provide advice for integrating Web-based activities, videoconference sessions, high-quality digital media presentations, etc. in their teaching activities. The process of designing courses has grown a more and more structured and interdisciplinary process (Szabo, 2002), one that is too complex for a lone-ranger professor to cope with (Bates, 1999). In some respects, teaching is thus developing from craftsmanship to a large scale production process (Cantoni & Di Blas, 2002), in which communication has become a critical variable. A fairly recent research trend in the field of educational technology is the development of visual instructional design languages. This paper is a sort of tutorial aiming to introduce one of these new professional tools for designers: EML – Educational Environment Modeling Language. In order to explain the relevance of EML, the first section is devoted to the identification of some features and issues concerning the Instructional Design process through the analysis of the literature. The second section introduces some relevant literature, among which the foundational work by Gibbons, and two other visual design languages. EML is presented in the third section through a detailed example, while additional references concerning other studies about the language are provided in section four. The conclusion presents a summary along with indications for further work.

Cognitive effectiveness of visual instructional design languages
The introduction of learning technologies into education is making the design of courses and instructional materials an increasingly complex task. Instructional design languages are identified as conceptual tools for achieving more standardized and, at the same time, more creative design solutions, as well as enhancing communication and transparency in the design process. In this article we dis...
متن کاملA Comparison of Visual Instructional Design Languages for Blended Learning
Visual Instructional Design Languages (VIDLs) are powerful tools for building conceptual models of instructional designs. E-learning courses appear to be a very suitable “playground” for VIDLs, as they usually provide a plethora of design options (e.g., tools, materials, delivery channels). Today there are a lot of different approaches to visual modeling of learning designs. In this paper we gi...
متن کاملEML - Educational Environment Modeling Language
EML is a modeling language spe cifically developed for the design of educational environments. It models the goals, requirement and design of the teaching and learning activity. Its core parts are a verbal statement and visual mapping of goals and a visual UML-like representation of the learning activity. EML can be profitably integrated with Instructional Design models in order to enhance the ...
متن کاملA Validated Framework for Gamified Electronic Teaching of English Language with a Systemic Approach to Instructional Design
One way of making learning English language interesting is through its gamified instruction, especially nowadays that most teachings are done virtually. Doing so, however, requires a valid framework. To construct such a framework a set of 22 peer reviewed papers on language learning and gamified teaching, from among 94 of such papers, was content analyzed and key concepts, and frequently used e...
متن کاملVisual Languages for Instructional Design: an Evaluation of the Perception of EML
In the last years, Instructional Design has seen the development of visual models for supporting and enhancing the design process. A part of them concern the definition of learning goals, while others address the definition of learning activities or learning materials. These tools supposedly reduce the cognitive load and enhance design communication. Few contributions try to assess the impact t...
